Myanmar’s history dates back thousands of years, with early civilizations such as the Pyu city-states thriving as early as the 2nd century BCE. These early kingdoms practiced Buddhism and developed rich cultural traditions.
The Pagan Empire (849–1297) unified much of present-day Myanmar for the first time. It produced thousands of temples in Bagan, many of which still stand today.
Myanmar became a British colony in the 19th century and was administered as part of British India. The country gained independence on January 4, 1948.
Post-independence Myanmar experienced political struggles, military rule, and reforms. Today, Myanmar continues to develop while preserving its deep cultural heritage.
